I almost never go by personal accounts of people who were at shows, they're usually very skewed and not very impartial, obviously. Sometimes that's for the better, sometimes for the worse. But it seemed plenty of "objective" listeners really raved about that Scarlet>Fire. I dunno, after 77-78 I don't get into many Scarlet>Fire's, I don't even really listen to 77-78 anymore as it is. And especially rarely listen to anything from 79 and up.

That said, this doesn't have to turn into one of those big arguments over what years "sucked" and which ones didn't, it's just what I'm into nowdays. For the most part lately it's just your usual 68-70 stuff now and then, and a fair amount of 72, 73. I don't really listen to full shows or 1st sets much these days, when I feel like hearing Grateful Dead it's usually an early 70's Dark Star, Other One, Playin', etc. Preferably something that lasts a half hour with very little singing involved. Basically, I listen more for the extreme ends of the improv rather than the shorter stuff. The lengthy improv has always been the primary draw for me with GD music, the great "songs" are just an added bonus. I've always definitely been more of an Eleven or Caution guy over a Ramble on Rose or Sugar Magnolia guy.
